Mixing of rescaled data and Bayesian inference for earthquake recurrence times

چکیده

The limits of a recently proposed universal scaling law for the probability distributions of earthquake recurrence times are explored. The scaling properties allow to improve the statistics of occurrence of large earthquakes over small areas by mixing rescaled recurrence times for different areas. In this way, the scaling law still holds for events with M≥5.5 at scales of about 20 km, and for M≥7.5 at 600 km. A Bayesian analysis supports the temporal clustering of seismicity against a description based on nearly-periodic events. The results are valid for stationary seismicity as well as for the nonstationary case, illustrated by the seismicity of Southern California after the Landers earthquake.

Bayesian Inference for Spatial Beta Generalized Linear Mixed Models

In some applications, the response variable assumes values in the unit interval. The standard linear regression model is not appropriate for modelling this type of data because the normality assumption is not met. Alternatively, the beta regression model has been introduced to analyze such observations. A beta distribution represents a flexible density family on (0, 1) interval that covers symm...

An Introduction to Inference and Learning in Bayesian Networks

Bayesian networks (BNs) are modern tools for modeling phenomena in dynamic and static systems and are used in different subjects such as disease diagnosis, weather forecasting, decision making and clustering. A BN is a graphical-probabilistic model which represents causal relations among random variables and consists of a directed acyclic graph and a set of conditional probabilities. Structure...

A One-Stage Two-Machine Replacement Strategy Based on the Bayesian Inference Method

In this research, we consider an application of the Bayesian Inferences in machine replacement problem. The application is concerned with the time to replace two machines producing a specific product; each machine doing a special operation on the product when there are manufacturing defects because of failures. A common practice for this kind of problem is to fit a single distribution to the co...

Classical and Bayesian Inference in Two Parameter Exponential Distribution with Randomly Censored Data

Abstract. This paper deals with the classical and Bayesian estimation for two parameter exponential distribution having scale and location parameters with randomly censored data. The censoring time is also assumed to follow a two parameter exponential distribution with different scale but same location parameter. The main stress is on the location parameter in this paper. This parameter has not...

Inference for the Proportional Hazards Family under Progressive Type-II Censoring

In this paper, the well-known proportional hazards model which includes several well-known lifetime distributions such as exponential,Pareto, Lomax, Burr type XII, and so on is considered. With both Bayesian and non-Bayesian approaches , we consider the estimation of parameters of interest based on progressively Type-II right censored samples. The Bayes estimates are obtained based on symmetric...
